Treat Everyone as an Old Friend

Raccoon. Why do you come here

in the night wreaking

havok on the bird feeder?

Where do you come from,

wily raccoon who runs

quickly to the river

when I appear at the window?

I see your two eyes glowing

there in the dark trees

you have eaten all

the sweet grape jelly

decimated the cakes

of damp suet

trampled the tender morning glory seedlings

How can we live together

little masked bandit,

strong-climbing as a monkey

Diabolical and loveable

trickster,

and needy as me
