Once when you were dying

in a hospital bed

in the kitchen

you explained The Things that Bring You Back

Ensnared

I leaned into the alchemy

as your words entered the world:

"Sometimes The Things that Bring You Back

are everyday things

A bowl.

A bird.

A Toaster."

and I hoped to one day to understand

the sublime simplicity

that you offered me

as you lay dying
