The snow has come, my love

and were we younger the snowshoes would be

rummaged from the attic

"They don't work" you would say

"But it's beautiful out there!" I would laugh

Shall we walk across the creek into the woods?

Find the snow shovel and make paths

to the workshop and barn?

Later, in the twilight, I see you

swaying in the light of the shop window

across the snowdeep yard

Your head dips as you push the plane

across the length of walnut board

that you found in the barn

this morning.
